1939 Register schedule numbers
« on: Tuesday 16 February 16 21:46 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone tell me what the schedule numbers signify on the register please?

I have two names I know to be German immigrants and they have the schedule numbers 6 and 5 for the wife, and 6 and 4 for the husband.  I was hoping to find something about their "permission" (for want of a better word) for residence in the U.K.

Up to now I have not discovered anything on the register for any of the families I have searched, that I did not already know.  Disappointing.

Each person's National Registration number was made up of the four-letter code for the enumeration district, the number of the household within the district, and finally the number of that individual within the household. From what you describe this couple are the fourth and fifth people within the sixth household in the district.

The records in the 1939 Register don't contain any direct link to sources of information about immigration.

There is a list of 3-letter Area Codes on the FindMyPast site which shows how they were allocated. The fourth letter indicates an enumeration district (ED) within the borough or district. A very few EDs had five letters.
