untangling the mess to find the connection! Oxley-Savory
« on: Wednesday 17 February 16 19:37 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,
I hope you can help, i am positively googly eyed trying to find the link, i've probably found it & it's staring me in the face just that i can't see it!

Herbert Savory 1882 & William Savory 1885 both born in Sheffield are a pair of reprobates born to
John Savory 1848 Warrington & Annie Elizabeth ??? 1851 Sheffield.
On the boys West Yorkshire reform records they list Farewell Oxley as uncle & his wife Milly (Amelia Cockayne)
William was with them as W Lavory on the 1881 census & Herbert on the 1891 census
Can you help me find out where the relation comes in?
Of course it could be that of honorary aunt & uncle & i've given myself a headache for nothing!! ;-)
Whilst i was researching them i seemed to have lost Farewell & Amelia's son Jno Oxley b 1866, i'd be interested to see where he turned up!

Hope you can help.

Hi from what I see Farewell & Amelia did not marry until 1872, so Jno b c 1866 could be this birth and appears to be married in 1891:-

John Charles Cockayne June qtr 1865 Sheffield 9c 450

Do you know that never even occurred to me! Odd as i believe the Amelia is the daughter of Harriet Cockayne/Rich & Amelia is living with her on the 1871 census & there is no John! There is a Charles Cockayne b1865 listed as Harriet's son!

Sorry, had to dash off earlier.  There is also a rather long report in the Sheffield Daily Telegraph, 2nd December 1865, about the marital troubles of Sarah Parkin and her Husband, William Cockayne, which makes reference to their daughter, Anne Elizabeth Cockayne.

It seems William was 'very cruel' to his wife and they had separated, but he had failed to pay her maintenance and had (allegedly) taken up with another woman so Sarah had initially gone to live with her cousin and then her mother.

I cant immediately find them all together on the census so it may be worth investing in the marriage certificates for Elizabeth & Amelia Cockayne to see if they both name William as their father.

......William Savory 1885 both born in Sheffield....William was with them as W Lavory on the 1881 census

William is aged 8 in 1881 so born c1873, not 1885.

The Reformatory School records show that Herbert was born on 10 August 1882 at Sheffield:

Probable Birth

September quarter 1882
SAVORY,    Herbert
Sheffield
9c   445

William was born on 24 September 1885 at Sheffield:

Probable Birth

December quarter 1885
SAVORY,    William
Sheffield
9c   522

He couldn't be the same person living with Farewell OXLEY in 1881.  In 1901 he is at the Calder Farm Reformatory.
