DR. Louise Prosper Bender - Quebec City
« on: Wednesday 17 February 16 19:58 GMT (UK) »
Recently read an blurb (http://www.patrimoine-culturel.gouv.qc.ca/rpcq/detail.do?methode=consulter&id=16192&type=pge#.VsSiofkrLIV) referencing Dr. Louise Prosper Bender as having served in the Union Army in the American Civil War, was wondering if anyone had a resource to find these records or info?

Also wondering about finding resources of probated wills from around 1872?

I am researching James Francis Henry Bender(1848–1936), who is Dr. Bender's brother, but around the time of his fathers death in 1872 leaves his family in Quebec City and travels and later resides in Pembroke, On. Henry seems to come from a very prominent and well off family in Quebec City to live a very simple and often difficult time in the Ottawa Valley.

For reference - DR Prosper Bender was born 30 July 1844 and passed away 25 January 1917

Article - Quebec Telegraph - Jan 26, 1917

There is reference in this article to going to the United States and serving on the staff of the northern army during a portion of the Civil War and in this connection came under the personal notice of General Grant etc etc.......................

According to the last line at this link re Quebec wills, there is no availability of a will search prior to 1979....

They were married in 1845 in a Wes Meth church, so the baptism may also be found elsewhere if at all....(Under her surname?) or are we are looking at 1845 birth? But I imagine we might be digging further than the poster needs.
Several of his books are listed here  http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/webbin/book/lookupname?key=Bender%2C%20Prosper%2C%201844-1917

Thank you very much!! I appreciate all the help and leads.
There is lots of information available about Prosper Jr as he seemed to be a very political and outspoken individual at the time, as well as a very successful medical carrier. I was just surprised to see him referenced as serving in the Union army as well. I guess the only way to see those records would be to go the national archives, perhaps something to put on my bucket list someday.

It's really Henry that i am chasing as my family is his direct descendants. I did know a brother came with him but as you said after being married and having their first child they moved onto the Toronto area. I'm very curious as to why the two older brothers would leave this prominent family and never speak of them again, I can only assume it has to do with the passing of their father and what appears to be their domineering older brother.

It's a family rumor that Henry was also going through medical school to become a dr at the time of his fathers death but i can't find records for him at Mcgill (unlike Prosper who's records are present and often referenced else where).

Hello, I am also related to Henry James Bender (1849 to 1936), he is my 2nd Great Grand-Father; I have his wedding records from October 18th 1875 in Pembrooke, Ontario, maried to Sarah Labelle.

This is an Ancestry Link, I don`t know if it will work:
https://www.ancestry.ca/interactive/1109/d13p_33810241/799956?backurl=https://www.ancestry.ca/family-tree/person/tree/103318031/person/310041265310/facts/citation/920344353272/edit/record

Together Henry and Sarah had 10 children ...

Would you have more information on Mary-Ann-Jane McMillan, Henry`s Mother?
I only know she was born in Ireland (I think on March 1st 1826)

Thank You!
