where was Phoenix Yard in Wakefield
« on: Wednesday 17 February 16 21:36 GMT (UK) »
My husband's relative Margaret Hackitt was a Boarder, age 55,living at 6 Phoenix Yard Wakefield on the 1901 Census. She was a widow, working as a charwoman. How can we find where in Wakefield this was?

Thanks

Hi,

Looking at the enumerator route it was one of the many yards off Kirkgate.  Personal guess would be somewhere on the east side fairly near the top of a modern day map.

I was going to try to narrow down the location by looking at the enumerator's route in the 1901 census, but I can't find Margaret on Ancestry, so I will provide the map instead and you might be able to find it yourself. Sadly the yards are not named but looking at nearby streets might give you some clues:

From memory (just off to bed)  Margaret was listed as Hackett not Hackitt.  I think I used as asterisk instead of the vowel.

Margarett Hackett is at RG13 Piece 4286 Folio 95 Page 44. Phoenix Yard was between 121 Kirkgate, (the Wheatsheaf Inn), and 125 Kirkgate.
You can see the Wheat Sheaf on this 1891 map https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/433617/420621/13/100460 you will have to zoom out.
