« on: Friday 19 February 16 09:38 GMT (UK) »
I'm sure these are thicko questions, but where is the battery on my laptop, how do i replace it? My existing one won't hold a charge and a message appears telling me to get a new one. Help!  ???

Find out the price and the part number first.  They are not just like torch batteries.

they can be located on the underside near to the lid hinge and can look like part of the laptop itself. Can weigh a bit too.

All depends on the make and model.

You can most probably buy an official replacement from the manufacturer but I have had success with a looky-likey one from Amazon. You must make sure the specification is idential though.

Compared to say 70pounds for a genuine battery, an Amazon special deal will be in the region of 25-30pounds.
Make a note of the battery code then put this code into your search.

This laptop has just one compartment underneath accessed by two small sliding latches - I move the latches in and the battery falls out.
My other (older) laptop has three compartments, all accessed by undoing tiny screw Phillips head screws, the largest one being for the battery.
Once you've found your replacement on-line you'll be able to tell by the shape/size where it will be located on your laptop.
As Dawnsh said, make sure you get the exact replacement - specification details like voltage in/out and amp/hour ratings should be on a label on the old battery.
One last point. Some of the cheapest replacements don't come with attached leads - these may have to be purchased separately.

It's not a thicko question if you've never done it before, but the hardest bit is deciding whether to spend the extra on a factory replacement or the budget option.

Good luck.

Many thanks to you all for your replies, Im very grateful. I've now found the battery, with a friend's help, and got the number + voltage etc.
Roger, won't the lead ( is that the same as charger? ) I've been using comply with a new battery?

If you use it a lot when powered by the battery you can take the opportunity of buying a larger capacity battery. They are usually measured in 'cells' but a 9 cell will fit in the same space as a 6 cell for example

You need to ensure that you put the onus on the seller. So quote him the make and model number of the laptop in an email in case of problems. DO NOT BUY from an overseas supplier. You have no rights.
