Many Thanks for your reply it is very helpful.John Hughes married Mary Roach 29th March 1869 in Swansea.He was a Slater-Plasterer by trade so was most probably working in South Wales for a short period and met Mary while she was in service.Do you know where Mary was in service ?

on the 1861 census she is in the parish of whitchurch pembrokeshire with the prossert family I believe that the prossets ran a large farm and that she was employed as a dairy maid

forgot to mention you said that john hughes was a slater at the time there was a huge slate qaurrey in whitchurch my relatives worked there and Erasmus roach occupation was a thatcher
