Locating Victorian serving soldiers - NRA Shooting team members 1864
« on: Wednesday 24 February 16 09:30 GMT (UK) »
I have a list of the 20 names of the Scottish team from which I'm trying to isolate any from the Aberdeen area. The team comprised the top marksmen drawn from the Scottish regiments.
I can initially do this by using FreeCen but I'm wondering if that in itself offers enough information.

Were serving soldiers recorded in the same way as the civilian population or was there a separate Army list which would, I believe, be based on the current location of the regiment?

The Gordon Highlanders recruited mainly in the Aberdeen area. Should I be looking for some sort of regimental record?

Probably best to look for them individually on Ancestry or FindMyPast.  If you have each name and regiment there is a good chance they can be found.  There would be no central list including men from different regiments.  Try posting a name/names.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

Newspapers often reported success in shooting competitions both locally and nationally.

If it was the National Rifle Association then you could contact them at this address

http://www.nra.org.uk/common/asp/general/address.asp?site=NRA

or if it was the National Rifle club of Scotland, then you could try this link http://www.nrcofs.org/

Good Luck
