Trying to trace ancestors back to Scotland
« on: Wednesday 24 February 16 23:03 GMT (UK) »
My great grand mother was born in Arkansas and died in Tulsa OK. Her birth date is 1890-1958d. Her husband was born in Iowa I think. His history only how's back to what would be my great, great, great grandfather. Doesn't tell me his parents. I'm stuck. Help. :)

Welcome to rootschat Jodi.

I have no experience with USA research, but generally it is advisable to purchase your great grandmother's birth certificate in the hope that that will give her parent's names. Then you can look for their marriage and births.

I don't understand your time line (greats and great greats etc), but when you find your ancestors who were born in Scotland, you will need the website called Scotland's People:
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
You have to sign up and purchase credits to view records.

The IGI is also worth looking at for Scottish records:
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list#page=1&region=UNITED_KINGDOM_IRELAND
Scroll down the page to S for Scotland.

If you would like to give us some names, places and dates then someone may be able to give you some help.

Your search obviously starts in the USA then will later move to Scotland, so you may need to start a new thread later. (don't do that yet - wait to see what responses you get here first).  :)

If you can provide the names and whatever other information you have, we can try to take a look for you to see if there is helpful information online.

If you are going to look on your own, I would recommend starting with the death or marriage records and working back from there, as they may contain parents' names and/or dates and places of birth of the bride, groom, or deceased.  www.familysearch.org has a lot of US census records and other vital records.  If you live in the US, check to see if your local library has any access to genealogy websites, such as Ancestry.com or Heritage Quest.

Statewide birth records in Arkansas did not begin until 1 February 1914. Copies of pre-1914 birth records may be obtained by contacting the county clerk's office of the county of birth. Little Rock and Fort Smith have birth records from 1881 which are available from the state.
