before the war 1939 census
« on: Thursday 25 February 16 01:09 GMT (UK) »
hi ,im trying to find 3 aunts in the before the war 1939 census ,all 3 of them were private nurses and none of them married ,they were all born in ireland ,but seeing as place of birth isnt documented i dont see why that should matter ,their names are

sarah ( anne) pilcher born 1868
margaret clara (just went by the name clara) born 1899
maud (mary) pilcher 1901
they all lived in and around the london area ,the latter 2 lived in finchley road for a period of time together ,but i cant find any of them on the register ,i ve even gone through just putting the surname in with female and single ,but nothing ,what am i doing wrong ?? ,any help would be much appreciated  :D

Have you tried searching without the surname, in case that was mistranscribed?

It's worth looking for them in electoral rolls, which might pin down the area they were living in 1939. Ancestry has electoral rolls for London up to 1965.
Transcribing Essex records for FreeREG.
Current parishes - Burnham, Purleigh, Steeple.

Hello,

Try an address search. Margaret and Maud are in Finchley Road at 259. Their surname has not been transcribed.
Is Sarah Anne's year of birth correct? There is a big age gap between her and the other sisters.

London Electoral Registers has a Sarah Pilcher at 108 William Road St Pancras in 1939 but she does not show there in the other register  ???

Regards
Heywood

hi ,thanks for that

sarah pilcher was maud and clara s aunt and all their birth years are correct, the finchley rd bits correct
the older aunt lived right in the middle of london so the 108 William Road St Pancras would be her,i think sarah lived in with the family she was serving and i think maud and clara did also for a time but they lived in finchley rd for years well into the late 1950 s my mum used to stay there
sarah and clara both died in 1952 i have their death records and wills ,both on same page ,i was only looking for clara s so that was a bit of luck for me  :)

Yes, I realised afterwards that she would be the aunt after seeing them in census.
I also looked one will up and found the other - very convenient  :)
Glad you found them.

It shows on the register.

Margaret - 16 October  1900

Maud - 27 April 1902

Couldn't be sure of Sarah.
