Birth Registration Index Volume and Page Numbers
« on: Thursday 25 February 16 12:52 GMT (UK) »
This is a newbie question and hope some-one can help.

I have searched for the Births of three children, two where born before the marriage and have found the original BMD Index entries. I have then found their entries for just after the marriage - their names are the same on both entries including Surname. The second entries have the following :-

Volume: ****C and Page Number: C**A  ( numbers replaced with * )

I take it this would mean that possibly the fathers / husbands name has been added after the marriage?

The third child was born after the marriage, but the only BMD Index entry I can find gives the following :-

Volume: ****B and Page Number B**A ( numbers replaced with * )

What do these codes mean as they do not fit with any other BMD Index numbers for the area of registration  ???
Sawyer, Rutty - Wiltshire
Double - Suffolk
Templeman - Nottinghamshire
Senior, Blakeb(o)rough - Yorkshire

their names are the same on both entries including Surname.

I would have thought if the entries had been changed to reflect the fathers name after the parents married then the surname would have been the mothers before and the fathers after not both surname entries the same  ???

Do they have the mothers surname before?

Hi,

The surname does not change, and it is not the mothers maiden name on either entry ??? :o but the Volume and Page numbers do  :-\

But of course why would the third child have such a different Volume and Page number compared to normal  ???

What years are we talking about?

Over the years district names and volume numbers have changed.

Might this help?

May I ask what timescale we are looking at?  I don't recognise the configuration of volume and page number as you have intimated. I would expect to see the volume as 1 or 2 figures followed by a letter, and page number as up to 4 figures, or a number of figures followed by /s, or a reference to "see letter/figure (denoting a quarter/year)"
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
If you don't ask the question, you won't get an answer.

So all entries show the fathers name?

I would expect each entry to have a different volume and page number.

Is there a + sign next to any of them indicating there are notes added you can click on for further information?

You can see the format of the GRO Births Indexes over the years at https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/most_customers_want_to_know.asp#FamilyHistory5 It looks as though the reference is from 1993+
