South Africans in WW1
« on: Saturday 27 February 16 12:53 GMT (UK) »
I'm currently in South Africa staying with friends.  We have found victory and British war medals issued to Sergeant C E Kirk, 1st S A R.  Any ideas where we can find further information on either the recipient or his Company?

Many thanks

Thanks Rosie, I hadn't thought of looking there.  Very useful.

Yes, having a great time, although, except for today when I'm having to wear long sleeves, it has been very, very warm  ;D. Sorry  :-X

He was also in the wrong regiment.

Odds are that Sgt Kirk survived and isn't on the CWGC site.

If you are in South Africa you might find yourself in Pretoria - which is where the records are. In the South African National Defence Force Archive.

It doesn't sound like the easiest place to do any research - http://archivesmadeeasy.pbworks.com/w/page/39274352/South%20African%20National%20Defence%20Force%20Archive%20(SANDFA)

That post is almost 5 years old, perhaps it has improved.

Many thanks newburylad.  I did have my doubts, but with no background information, I kept it in mind.  I'll pass on the information regarding Pretoria.
