Thanks you once again Elwyn, It does look like my options are limited, but I will try The RC records, his birth date could have been a bit later than stated on the Census, and of course the Methodists may have something useful. Once again many thanks for your help. Regards, Jim.

Hi Kingskerswell, thank you, yes I have noticed that researching Irish ancestors is not an easy quest, but I shall have a look at the two possible sites Elwyn has suggested, and hope I hit paydirt. Once again thank you for your help in my search. Regards, Jim.

This is my Family, Joseph came to Liverpool, presumably because the farm wouldn't support all the family. he was my Great Grandfather, his Grandson was also called Mathew (my father) . Both my father and grandfather were professional soldiers and served in Boer War , 1st WW & 2nd WW. Grandfather moved from Liverpool to the North-East. I am one of 10 brothers and sisters.
Do hope you pick this up.

Joseph was my Grandfathers brother.  He enlist for 1st WW with South Lancashire Regiment aged 38, he suffered mortal wounds at the Pashandale salient in 1917, was evacuated and died from his wounds. Buried Anfield Cemetery. His brother, my Grandfather was a Sgt with Liverpool Irish, he was 15 miles away fighting in 3rd battle of Ypres- survived the war and died in Middlesbrough in 1956.

Hi JohnJ, thanks for replying, my Grandmother was Joseph's daughter Elizabeth Jane born 1878, you say Joseph born 1842 had a brother named John, I didn't know that, although a John Jeffers is mentioned in a book about Liverpool during the 1880's or 1890's, There is also a Samuel Jeffers born about 1836 at Forkhill, Armagh. Word handed down through my family say Joseph and family were from Armagh, although Joseph never stated where he was born, Samuel, who's Father was also named Matthew (Coincidence ?) states he was born at Forkhill. A further interesting point you made was that your Grandfather's Brother Joseph enlisted in the South Lancs Regiment during WWI So Did Samuel and my Grandad George, who was killed in October 1916, Samuel was severely wounded, shipped to hospital in England, but died in 1917, he too is buried in Anfield cemetery, Liverpool, perhaps Joseph and Samuel were in the same company, very interesting. Speak again.
