Alias used in Workhouse inmate records
« on: Monday 29 February 16 18:16 GMT (UK) »
Researching an ancestor and found a record from Strand Union Workhouse/later Cleveland Street which shows my possible ancestor as 'Beels Mary (alias Royal)' What does this alias mean? Does it suggest. as I hope, that she was married to a Beels but is currently a Royal??

Thanks

You don't give an indication of her age, it just means she was known by both name at various times.

This is not unusual, it often happens when a child or older person takes the name of a stepfather, sometimes just for convenience, perhaps to conceal illegitimacy, oo simply they have chosen to use another name.

Hi. She was 64 when she was admitted and 67 when she died. Thanks anyway. Just another piece of the jigsaw ;)

The following article mainly refers to the West Country usage of "alias", but it might be pertinent?

Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)
