Thanks for that. Another conspiracy theory gone! It is interesting to note that George's business was failing. Poor man.

Very sad.

I forget which year it was 1925 or 26-but there was a mention in the Shoal Lake paper that he had a work related accident and one of his hands had to be amputated. I'm sure that didn't help his state of affairs.

Hi Tessa Spencer

I have been looking at the Swedish side of things and couldn't find anything in Sweden for him at the moment. The surname Rosvall is Swedish so I believe he took that from a relative perhaps. "Ros" is rose and "vall" is a field or cropland.

His father was most probably Anders Andersson and as you said a seaman. Just need to find where he got married to Brita O'Brian. According to 1921 Census she was born in Ireland.
And you are sure he was born in Grimsby.

Ian

We have his marriage certificate that states he was born in Grimsby. If he was born on a boat in the harbour he may not have been registered in UK at all! He is proving to be very elusive in the years prior to going to Canada.
It seems his mother's name really was Brita O'Brian (and Irish) but Brita is a Scandinavian name, short for Birgitta. There seems to be a real mixture there! Good luck with your search. We seem to have reached a dead end.

Anders Anderson from the Faroe Islands in Grimsby in the census, living alone
interesting
have you ever thought his parents may never have married, and if he was born aboard a vessel his birth still would have been registered

there are three O'Brian children born Grimsby
with their Aunt Winifred O'Brian in Shitlington Yorkshire
Bridget, Margaret and Kate,
Gunning County Down,Kneale Isle of Man,Riddle Tynemouth,Bibby Kendal/Bradford,Colenso Penzance/Barrow-in-Furness,Steele Corney Fell,Chapman Ely,Dawes Alfreton,Blamire Westmoreland and Ulverston

Thanks for the information about the O'Brian children. I'll see if I can find a link.

Here are George & Clara in the 1911 Canada Census, within a month before  their daughter Edla Clara was born in July the same year:

CENSUS 1911: Coulter Village, Township 2, Souris (District 23), Manitoba
Head: George ROSVALL 35, b Jul 1875, England, imm 1905, Blacksmith
Wife: Clara ROSVALL 32, b May 1879, England, imm 1910
Boarder: Percy HAVERFORD

http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/SurnameSearch.jsp?surname=Rossall&districtId=23
(incorrectly transcribed on this source as  ROSSALL)
(other sources incorrectly transcribe as ROSWELL)

If his Birth is correctly so  "July 1875"  and if his birth was registered in the 'normal'  English Registry, then Sep Qtr 1875 would be the expected qtr to find him in.

Cheers
