Scottish Links for the Hendry & Russell Family

A strange query! I am researching the Hendry family in Norfolk and the Russell family in the north of Essex.  Family tradition has been that there are Scottish roots and my grandmother talked of the family coming from the ‘islands’.  I have researched back to the late 18th C and no sign of the Scottish connection!  Has anyone found any links with these family names and Scotland please?

That's interesting, as in my wife's tree there is an Ann Hendrie who married James Richardson 2/7/1814 in St John, Hackney. According to their son's obituary in an Australian newspaper, his mother was of French and Scottish background. I have yet to find a birth for her.

Hendry (and some of its variants) can be found in Ayrshire (I have one line of Hendries) and Russel is more common in the Renfrewshire areas.

Looking at both surnames in Blacks "Surnames of Scotland" he lists Hendry variants from the 12th century in Ayrshire and Fife while Russel also has 12th Century roots in Paisley (Renfrewshire).

Many thanks for your help in replying.  For the Hendry family I have gone back to William Hendry who married Ann Bell in 1759, but I cannot find his birth date.  They lived in Harpley (Houghton), Norfolk. With the Russell family I have researched back to Samuel who married Sarah Whitlock in 1759, the marriage taking place in White Notley, Essex.  Again I cannot find Samuels' date of birth as yet.  Sadly anyone from either family who could have helped are no longer with us, the frustrations of doing family history when you yourself are older!
