stationmaster

apologies if this has already been answered on another thread - I have been unable to find it

any ideas where to look for photos and information relating to an ancestor who was a stationmaster? at Addiscombe station Croydon - tried railway ancestors with no luck - did get some help from Croydon local studies department and fellow researchers but would really like some railway memrobelia and photo in uniform (unlikely I know) - station was demolished ?when

ancestor's name was Samuel Croxson and he was stationmaster in 1891 census died 1908 - have a testimonial when retired in 1904 after 34 years service for railways so surely there is a photo somewhere - any help gratefully recieved - Nikki :)

There is a local website dealing with the demolition of Addiscombe Station in 2002:

http://www.tboa.co.uk/index.html

I remember the station from my youth but as I was last in Croydon (for more than an hour) way back in 1981, I'm not sure my memory is much value.

Apparently the last trains were in 1997, but I thought it closed earlier than that:

http://www.southernelectric.org.uk/seglibraryaddiscombe.html

And some information on the line Addiscombe station was linked to (it was a teminus spur off this line) can be found here:

http://www.jb.btinternet.co.uk/pages/WSCRmain.htm

Addiscombe Station was originally part of the South East and Chatham Railway - see http://www.secr.org.uk/

There's masses of train memorabilia and documentation so these routes might be worth pursuing.

By the way, Samuel Croxson was station master at Addiscombe (South Eastern Railway) in 1890/1891 as he is listed in Kelly's 1891 Directory of Kent, Surrey and Sussex.  You might want to check any available earlier directories at http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/index.asp

After I'd done my last post, I recalled that I had seen a picture of Addiscombe Station somewhere.  I trawled through my Croydon old photo books and came acoss the attached photo.  It is from Croydon in Old Photographs edited by Stuart Bligh, Budding Books, 2000.

This particular photograph is from the Croydon Local Studies Library

Whoops, that was a bit big!

Anyway I thought I'd focus down on the four interesting men in the middle next to that lovely looking Bell.  Sorry it's fuzzy.

My gut feeling would be that the man in the bowler hat is most likely the station master.  But I would get some advice on that - my knowledge is based on how station masters were portrayed in Thomas the Tank Engine.  Of course it could also be the Deputy, because it was yer man's day off!

I suggest approaching Croydon Local Studies Library - saying that this particular photograph is on page 79 of Stuart Bligh's book.
