Thomas Walters 1861 census Leamington, completed
« on: Tuesday 08 March 16 11:57 GMT (UK) »
I've been searching for Thomas WALTERS in the 1861 census. He was born in 1840 in Newcastle upon Tyne, his brother Horatio was born in 1842 at Chorlton. I think he was with his parents Thomas and Jane at Sheffield in 1841, and with his aunt at Bilston in 1851 (called by his middle name Mortimer). His father had died in 1844.

I recently found a Thomas WALTERS in Leamington in 1861 the right age, although it says his place of birth was Birmingham, living with James and Louisa HANDLEY and Louisa's siblings. I'm wondering if this could be my Thomas? I can't see any other Thomas WALTERS born around 1840 in the Birmingham area (there is a Daniel Thomas but he's accounted for, I think in Staffordshire in 1861).

So I'm really after a second opinion. Does this sound feasible? I can't trace any Thomas born 1840 in Birmingham in any other census, so perhaps he either fibbed or it was just assumed he came from Birmingham. My Thomas emigrated to Australia in 1863.

If anyone is interested, there is this thread from a couple of years ago when I first started asking rootschatters about Thomas, http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=691359.45 although we couldn't find him in 1861.

Thanks in advance - all opinions welcomed even if you think I'm barking up the wrong tree!

As usual, after actually posting something, I've done some more research and found another entry that looks much more promising, this time in Toxteth Park (near his remaining family) and with the correct place of birth and even the correct occupation compared to his marriage certificate 3 years later. Though the name is McWALTERS, it could be a slip of the pen as he is lodging with a Scottish family and I assume the enumerator just kept on with the prefix.

Hello Karen and welcome to RootsChat.

I'm descended from Thomas Mortimer WALTERS' son George Hugh WALTERS. I haven't really looked Thomas' other children in much detail, mainly concentrating on his parents. More than happy to share notes! Are you also related - which line are you from?  :D

Dear Maddy
We are Andrew McLachlan Walters decendants.  I have been researching the family in Australia and England for 24 years.  But, keep hitting brickwalls to Andrew's two sisters Jane and Annie.
Have found your posts very interesting - as details reflect small details of oral history handed down through the family.  How has your research proceeded with the sisters?  Look forward to your reply.

I'll have to dig out all my notes about this family.  :D I was in touch with a niece of Ann who gave me some information about Ann and Jane. Will send you a personal message.

From memory, Jane married Arthur ELLERY, a ship's captain, in London in 1909, they had a child in 1910 and returned to Australia in 1911. Jane died in 1913 in NSW, and Captain ELLERY remarried.

Ann died in 1967.

Pretty sure I have more info, happy to share.  :D
