Forres Photographer Circa 1890
« on: Wednesday 09 March 16 21:47 GMT (UK) »
I just received a photo of my grandfather taken by a Portrait and Landscape Photographer by the name of D. Johnstone, High Street, Forres, Morayshire (circa 1890). Does anyone know where archives of this phographer's photos may be kept, if anywhere?

From the info on LIBINDX, and a possible marriage in 1862 for that David Johnston, there is this 1862 birth for a likely son to him, also called David https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYYC-43R

Reason I mention is that there is a likely entry for this David, also showing as a photographer in 1891:

David Johnston, 31, photographer b. Marnock. Visitor at the Rae household at Weaver's Few, Kircudbright.

Good detail on the link mentioned by Jen.

Unless published there will be no archive.  There were hundreds of photographers in the UK.  For years I looked for more photos taken by Duncan Wright Gordon and found none.  This search eventually led me to here http://www.cartedevisite.co.uk

I made contact with this group who in turn put me in contact with a photographic mailing list which doesn't seem to be around any longer.  They suggested the local library as many show up there donated from various sources.

Therefore my suggestion to you; try the Forres Library forres.library@moray.gov.uk and ask if they have any photos taken by the Johnston's.

Don
I have turned off all email notifications, thank you.

If there is a surviving archive of photographs taken by Johnstons, they are far more likely to be in the Moray Heritage Centre in Elgin than in Forres Library. Unfortunately the Heritage Centre has recently been moved into Elgin Library where it has far less space than it used to have, and I don't know what arrangements have been made for storage of and access to its collections.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

I haven been collecting photographs of a Victorian photographer who is an ancestor of my wife and have been able to buy them occasionally on ebay. A quick check this morning shows one photograph by a D Johnston with an address in Turriff - could this be the same person?. Local museums may have some photographs if he photographed local worthies, shots of the town etc. However the existence of an archive is sadly highly unlikely.
