The English names Jacob and James derive from the same source, with James coming from Latin Iacomus, so maybe this may be right :-\
This might be Alice as a girl

1891

James Rooney 41
Mary 39
James 19
Mary K 15
Alice 10
Michael 7
Joseph 7
Frank 4

do you think Jacobus Rooney the Godfather is the brother of Alice ??...looks like it to me ?
so we need to find  Alice Rooney father Jacob on a census 1881-1891 ??
added just seen your next post as I was about to post ...I didn't know that Jacobus could be James as well ??...hopefully you have found the family then ....

so in the future if I see Jacobi - Jacobus - they can both be James ?...

What was the date John celebrated as his birthday?  Have you considered asking the GRO to do a search for a boy surname Walker with that birth date in either 1920 or 1921 with parents James and Alice?

It is possible that he was registered and baptised in one name but always called something different. I have an instance of this in my own family with a child registered and baptised as Thomas but always called as Frederick. Could the child in the baptism posted above named James be your John?

Just another thought using The date John thought he was born have you tried a search on the 1939 National Identity Register? Using the date for the James Walker found above I did a blanket search for that birth date but with only the surname. The free index shows a possible hit for the James Walker above. If you look at it the address may ring bells with family members.

Do you have any addresses for John that it would be possible to search electoral rolls for clues as to family members?

www.lancashirebmd.org.uk

1920

WALKER   James   Ardwick   Manchester   ROONEY   ARD/20A/80

As previously stated - there is no John Walker birth in 1920 with a mothers maiden name of Rooney

If he was baptised in February 1920 - it fits with this birth registration on freebmd

Births March qtr 1920
James Walker  mmn Rooney    Chorlton    8c   1724

Thank you everyone so much for the help!!

The date he celebrated his birthday was 27 July 1920.

In his paperwork he has his mother Alice passing away at the Radcliffe Infirmary Oct/Nov 1945 at the age of 62.

If John was born in July 1920 he can't have been the brother of James Walker born in February 1920. James we know was the son of Henry Walker and Alice Rooney so who where John's parents?

The other thing that puzzles me is that I thought the Radcliffe  Infirmary was in Oxford. In John's papers is there Alice's death certificate? If yes who registered her deaths?

Did John keep in touch with his siblings? If yes do you have any information on them? Dates of birth and addresses etc?

Last question was John in England in  1939.

Sorry for all the questions?
