What happened to Emily Jane Terry/Reed?
« on: Wednesday 16 March 16 12:53 GMT (UK) »
Emily Jane TERRY was born 31 Jan 1882 in Swindon, Wiltshire. She married David Cuthbert Ebsworth REED on 02 Jun 1900 in Swindon. David joined the RAMC and went to France in 1915 where he was gassed in 1917. Before he returned home in 1918, Emily left the marital home and, according to family stories, went to Birmingham. David married again in 1933, giving his status as widower. All attempts to find Emily's death have so far failed.

If she was missing for more than 7yrs he may have applied to have her declared officially "dead"

Did they have any children?  What happened to them when Emily disappeared?

Have you looked for her under Reed and Terry on the 1939 list just in case she was elsewhere and using her maiden name

Carole - thank you for your comments. It's possible that he went the legal route but I don't know where to look. I do know that there were no children from either marriage. I have searched  the 1939 register by her birthdate and Emily and that returns 23 hits - none of which mean anything to me.

There are also Emily deaths with that birthdate.

I guess she could have moved in with another guy and used his name, but never actually married. And then died with that name.

Thanks to all for your comments. I guess that she could have gone anywhere in the world using any name.

Hi, if she had been missing for 7 years David might not have made any application but just said he was a widower when he remarried, I believe this was fairly common.
Alternatively look for a death a bit before David's second marriage, he may have heard somehow that she had died and then felt free to remarry.
