James WALKER in Birmingham
« on: Friday 18 March 16 04:55 GMT (UK) »
Is anyone able to do a lookup for me please before I send away and end up with the wrong certificate.

I am looking for details of a marriage at St Jude's, Birmingham on 15th May 1864.
Mary Ann Hands (probably a widow) married a James Walker.
The James Walker I am looking for was born in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, about 1822.
He was a Master Tailor.
He had previously married in 1843 in Dumfries
Between 1851 and 1861 he deserted his wife and children - at that point they were living in Birkenhead, Cheshire.

There are also two burials that I am interested in.  Both are at St Peter & St Paul's in Aston, Birmingham:
18 September 1877 - Burial of James Walker, 58
29 October 1877 - Burial of Mary Walker at Aston

I believe there is a Birmingham FHS Fische No.1039 which has MI's (James seems to be page 60 and Mary Ann page 74).
I wonder if this is the couple who married in 1864?

There appear to be a lot of Walkers in this area so I would appreciate it if anyone can help - I am in Australia and therefore not able to do these searches myself.

Thanks,

Irene

James and Mary Ann were both aged 22.  Her father George HANDS and his father James WALKER.

In 1861 there is a James WALKER aged 39, a Tailor, born Dumfriesshire living at Lichfield, Staffordshire.

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M7H1-GCF

The actual record shows Dumfriesshire as the place of birth and he appears to be a lodger (along with many others) in the home of Francis BARNETT, a Master Sweep.

This doesn't look like the James your looking for.
1871:

Mary A Walker  29 b. B'ham
Henry Walker  9         do
George Walker  5       do
Alice Walker  2          do
Eliza Walker  21 sister b. Northfield

next door is George Hands 25 b. Northfield & family.

RG10; Piece: 3096; Folio: 108; Page: 5

The burial details for Mary:
Add: Bridge St. widow of James aged 57.
For James add: Bridge St. no age given but FreeBMD says 58.

This is them in 1871:
Bridge St. West. Cottage no.203
James Walker  47 tailor b. Scotland
Mary Walker  51 b. Stourbridge

Don't be concerned that the ages are out at death as this info was only as good as the knowledge of the persons registering them.

By 1871 the tailor, James born in Scotland is described as married to Mary Walker, aged 51 and from Stowbridge, Worcestershire (possibly Stourbridge?)
Living in Birmingham (St. George).

Thank you to those who have responded to my post re the above.

When I saw the details on the 1861 Census for Lichfield, I felt that he was the James Walker that I was looking for and then the 1871 had me looking for a marriage to a Mary between 1861 and 1871 which brought me to Mary Hands.  However with your help I have eliminated that marriage and so the search continues for a marriage between James and a Mary.

Did James and Agnes have two more children?

1861 census Agnes noted as married deserted along with son Robert 13 has 2 daughters
Agnes D Walker age 6 Oxon Cheshire
Elizabeth M M Walker age 3  (1858) ‘’

1861c RG 9; Piece: 318; Folio: 43; Page: 23
John DAVIDSON lodger mar. Scotland Mariner
Mary wife 26 Scotland
Mary G F dau. 6 mths Oxton Cheshire, Mary’s middle names are Goldie Fisher

1871 census gives Agnes Walker marital status as a Widow
RG10; Piece: 3752; Folio: 48; Page: 2
Mary DAVIDSON Head widow 34 Scotland Dressmaker
Agnes dau 16 Oxton Cheshire
Elizabeth dau 13
Mary G F dau 10
Andrew son 8
Agnes WALKER mother widow 54 Scotland dressmaker
Alexander brother unm 25 Scotland Sailor
Robert brother unm 23 Birkenhead Cheshire ship carpenter
1 boarder

Was Mary Davidson Agnes Lawson's daughter ?

There's a  Mary Lawson age 5 born c1837 Dumfriesshire, Scotland with
Robert 50 & Mary Lawson 50 and an  Agnes Lawson age 27 on 1841 c in Scotland,
plus James Lawson 20, Mary 12 & William 10

For info. if anyone else is looking James & Agnes on 1851 c

James Walker 28 Scotland Master Tailor
Agnes 35 Scotland
Alexander 6 Scotland
Robert 3 Birkenhead Cheshire

They may not have married unless his wife died before him.

This looks to be Agnes' death entry

I hadn't thought of him not marrying if he hadn't got a divorce and how many people would have got divorced back in those days.

Mary was Agnes Lawson's daughter and the two girls with Agnes in 1861 were Mary's daughters so Agnes' grand-daughters and not her daughters.
