1939 Register - Northern Ireland - Anyone tried it?
« on: Friday 18 March 16 10:48 GMT (UK) »
I have some NI addresses I would like to check on the 1939 Register.  I believe the access to it is free, under the Freedom of Information act - has anyone any experience of applying for info from this register - how complicated is it/how long does it take?  Thanks in advance!

I have recently sent my first FOI request to PRONI for the 1939 NI Register. I sent it on 10th March and received a reply with PDF attachment on the 14th March.

See: " https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/forms/proni-enquiry"  for the form to fill in.

PRONI have now been amalgamated into NI Direct and it's hard to navigate around. Make sure you provide plenty of information on the form in the text box and ensure that a full address for your ancestors is provided.

Hope this helps.

I obtained one 1939 record from PRONI without any great difficulty. I can confirm there was no fee for what I asked for. It only took a few days.

I spoke to an official at PRONI who thought that the intention is to put the information on-line on their website, in due course (broadly mirroring access to the records in England & Wales). No timescale was given.

Thank you both for that information - I applied using the same form - I agree the PRONI website is very confusing to navigate, but there is some great info on there if you persevere!  The Calendar of Wills is very useful too - and great that it is free to view.

I tried it and got a couple of good results. Should have checked in the 1939 Belfast Street Directory first :) Have done another one after checking that just now.
