Home for Deserted Mothers : Glasgow
« on: Saturday 19 March 16 09:16 GMT (UK) »
In the 1911 census Mabel/Mable Baillie and her month old daughter, Helen, are shown living at this establishment at 308 Renfrew Street - I have Helen's birth certificate and I think she was subsequently (unofficially) adopted. Mabel/Mable does not seem to appear on any previous English or Scottish census.  Does anyone know if or where the records of this home are now kept that may give information on what happened to them after 1911.

Many thanks for any help anyone can give on this - Robert

Hi Don,

The Helen in the family I am looking at was born in Blythswood - I'm fairly certain that I know who "adopted" her, but it is her mother Mabel Baillie who remains a mystery.

Thanks for checking that. Rob.

There is one marriage in Glasgow for a Mabel Bailey in 1920. Have you discounted it?

Hi Robert,

You have the 1911 census information which you obviously got from Scotlands People. As Monica suggested have you looked at the 1920 marriage?

Also try the Mitchell Library in Glasgow as they hold many local records I believe and may have something on the Renfrew Street home.

Thanks to all for your comments.  I will have a look at the marriage for Mabel Bailey.  The 1911 census gives Mabel's age as 26 years and that she was born in England!  I will email the Mitchell Library to see if they hold any records for the said home in Renfrew Street.

Robert.

1901 English census has numerous possibilities under the name Mabel Bailey born c1885

Do you know who her parents are?

If her age of 26 in 1911 is accurate, she is more likely to have been born in 1884 than in 1885.

There are no Mabel Baillies listed in FreeBMD births 1884-1885, but there are a couple of dozen Mabel Baileys.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
