I have done some work for my cousin in Belfast whose mother was Jane Cross. born on the 10thOct 1910 and her mother Emma Cross resided at the Abandoned mothers home 308 Renfrew st. the baby was then adopted two weeks after birth and i know that the"matron" at the home was a Mrs.Elizabeth Graham;and the building or business was owned by Mr Robert Gourley. His residence was 8 Marlborough Terr, Glasgow. does anyone know if there are any records of Adopted or fostered children from the home still in existence. I know my Grandfather"took" Jane Cross into his family and she became know as Jane[Jean] Cross Stewart. I know that the Mitchell Library have some records]

I think it is unlikely that you will find records of what actually happened at that time. Adoption laws were introduced for the first time in Scotland from 1930. Before this date, they were private and unofficial and no records were created or maintained.

See www.nrscotland.gov.uk/research/guides/adoption-records for additional background. Have you checked with the Mitchell Library about what records or info they actually hold?

Thanks for the timely reply.
They[ the Mitchel] have some records, which is how i managed to get the dates for the adoption of Jane Cross.The archivist looked them out for me and replied via e-mail

My Great, great grandmother registered as this address when she gave birth to my great grandfather in 1913. I’d love to know if there is any info at all out there on it

I have start and end info on my Great grand father but lacking info such as father or why he changed his name from Henry Burrell Martin to Robert Burrell.

Was really hoping for a nugget of info from a register or files from the home but from my visits to Mitchell Library so far, it's been unsuccessful

If you have searched at the Mitchell and nothing showing there, guess there may be nothing further to find that will assist you regarding the circumstance around the birth of Henry.

Henry's mother's maiden name, was it Martin?  If so, likely reputed father's surname could well be Burrell. Not unusual for illegitimate children to go by the surnames of their reputed fathers in later years.

What if anything is showing on Henry's marriage and death certs relating to father's details?
