Irish Flax Growers, 1796 Question
« on: Saturday 19 March 16 18:37 GMT (UK) »
I have two geography questions.

In Irish Flax Growers, 1796 I found a record that mentions, Musickfield, Galway. Where was Musickfield located?

There is another reference to Ballynakill, Galway. Would this refer to the area now known as Woodford, Galway about 10 miles SW of Portumna?

Cork: Hurley, Barrett
Donegal: Kelly, Diver

Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.

hallmark,

The Musickfield that I refer to is definitely in Galway. It is spelled with a ck.

Here is the link to the Galway Flax Growers page:

http://www.failteromhat.com/flax/galway.htm

I assume that it is an archaic name for a place now with a different name.

One of the Ballinakills in your link is the one that I was referring to.

Hopefully someone will know where Musickfield, Galway was or is.

Thanks.

The only non flax growers reference I can find to Musickfield is this Patrick O'Neal

If you have a FindMyPast sub his record might give you a clue.

Sinann,

Thanks for the link. It confirms that there were other records naming Musickfield, Galway.

I don't have FindMyPast. I'm not actually interested in the Patrick O'Neal Record.

I am actually trying to find out about Michael Tressy who ls listed in the Flax Growers as living in Musickfield, Galway.

There are more than 35 other people on the Flax Growers Galway list also living in Musickfield, Galway.

The place existed, but I'm sure that it now has a different name. Hopefully I will learn what it is.

Thanks again.

I meant his record might give a clue to where Musickfield was, any way there is another reference to a man from Musickfield Galway going to The barony of Claremorris Mayo so perhaps it's in the north of the county.

Sinann,

You might be correct about it being near County Mayo.

I just found a Musicfield Trig, a Trigonometrical station in Gurtnagunnet townland in Addergoole Parish.

http://places.galwaylibrary.ie/asp/fullresult.asp?id=36770

The spelling is different, but that happens frequently. I'm still not sure if it is the place that I am looking for, since there were so many people listed as living there in the Flax Growers, about 38.

If Musickfield is just below County Mayo, it would not be in an area where my Family lived back then.

Thanks for the help.

That is just south of Claremorris so looks good. It's also quite close to the Musicfield in Mayo which hallmark linked to so perhaps that shows it was once a much larger area.
Shame it's not your people's area but might be useful to someone.
