It's not a memorial frame. All ambrotypes came in frames like this.

My guess for the ages of the men would be 25-30 and 40-50.

The man on the right does resemble John Jackson but I don't think it could be him as they both look a similar age, but the photos are years apart.

I think your photo looks like it would be of a father and son, or possibly brothers

Not all of them in frames like this. But somewhere I read that this shape matte was used in memorial photos. Doesn't mean it is.

Thanks Matthew,  I did realise that it couldn't be John Jackson because of the age of the picture, I should of wrote 'family resemblance' sorry. I have read that a lot of the Southport fishing families were close and intermarried across the generations. I do believe that it really could be Ralph to the left. :)
