William Garner
« on: Sunday 20 March 16 11:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to trace any baptism/birth records for a William Garner born in about 1791 in Carlisle, Cumbria. Parent's details unknown.

He later moved to London & married an Amelia Hudson 16/02/1822 & I have traced his census records from 1841 to his death on 06/11/1861 in Bethnal Green, London.

It is details of his birth that I am now interested in. His occupation was a rope maker and silk manufacturer & it is likely that his father was in a similar trade. I have looked in all the usual places but have been unable to trace anything that looks like a possible record of his birth.

Any thoughts?

Regards

I have searched on Ancestry, FamilySearch & FindmyPast, FreeReg and any Cumbrian family search websites that allow free search access.

Have drawn a complete blank on all of them and don't know how to move forward in tracing William's Cumbrian roots.

Hi again in addition to the 1851, 1841 ( Rounded Down) 1791, 1861 1793,  and at death 1793.

PS both main sites either have him 1861 transcribed as  William James or William J Jamers 1793 Carlisle in Bethnal Green, looking at original could be a J as a middle name or a flourish from the name above him?!

Hi,

His burial can be found in the NC records, is there a history of Non Conformity in the family ?

Death age 68...Birth c1793

Have you considered a spelling variation in his surname ? There are lots of GARDNER families about up North.

Thanks for responses.

In reply - as far as I am aware there is no non conformity in the Garner family although the mother of William's wife, Amelia Hudson, was a lady named Susannah Bean and she was descended from French Huguenots. All my Hudsons, Beans, Garners and other off- shoots were all weavers and lived in the same area (Bethnal Green) of London so it is possible they all had a common ancestry from French Huguenots.

I do have William's death cert, which is dated 06/11/1861 & on that his age is recorded as 70. The informant was wife, Amelia & address is recorded as 4, Old Bethnal Green Rd.
