Family Tree of New Zealand Crake's
« on: Tuesday 22 March 16 22:35 GMT (UK) »
I have been researching the family tree of my Father Harry & Uncle John (Jack) Crake.
Their father was John (Jack) Colville Crake, Born in Durham County 1891 Died 4/2/1921 Atiamuri NZ.  His parents were William Crake, Born West Rainton, Durham 1852 - 23/11/1906 Tyne & Wear, Durham.  Married Emily Crake (Atkinson) 1868 - 12/12/1906.

I have got back as far as George Crake, 1790 - 1852, East Rainton, Durham, Coal Miner
Married to Jane Crake (Morgan) 3/3/1806, Jarrow, Durham. Died 22/5/1865.
They had 3 sons, James Born at Penshaw, Durham, 1821, Twins John & Thomas Born at House Lane Durham, 1826. John Died Oct 1890.  John is my Great Great Grandfather.

I have hit a brick wall trying to go back any further, any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello and welcome to RootsChat . The 1851 census has George Crake born 1785 West Rainton :

Although there is a baptism for a George Crake in 1790 in Gateshead I think this baptism in 1785 in Houghton le Spring might be more likely :

( George 2 Jan 1785 Houghton le Spring Joseph Crake and Rebecca )

You may have already ruled this out ?

The way I went back through my family tree was via the Bishops Transcripts. My family luckily did not move at all, so could be traced through three to four churches in the immediate vicinity. You may find yours very similar.

It takes a bit of doing but once you get the hang of it it is quite simple. You will need a notebook or excel spreadsheet and each generation can be set out. I put all baptisms of family named then went back to find the corresponding baptism of father. Hopefully they have the mothers named as well, however this is not always the case and then the marriages have to be found.

You can use this. https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1309819

Also Durham University Library has an extensive collection, much of which is online, including wills, old maps and photos which are a true gem.

Googling a particular person with a date (IE: !550) and location (IE: Houghten le Spring) can reveal many items about a person if it has been written down and transcribed and many many things have been. I managed to track my family back in the same area of Durham to the mid 1200's. It has taken a lot of time but it was great fun and very interesting.
