Banghole Croydon.?
« on: Wednesday 23 March 16 08:13 GMT (UK) »
I am new to this forum and I'm hoping that someone on here has some information on my Father Harry Bailey born 04/04/1915, his father, Harry Bailey was killed in Ypres in 1915 (21/12/15) age 21. My Fathers mothers name was Simmonds but there is also the name of Weaver and Ward were involved? I'm told that he was from Banghole? Willford Road possibly, and he lived in Priory Road in 1939, any information would be gratefully received. I think his first wifes maiden name was Stockdale.

 ???
I hope not.
My Father never really talked about his upbringing, apparently his Mother kicked him out at 11, I think his Aunt Rebecca looked after him? I remember Aunt Flo (Weaver?), Margaret and visited Charlie Ward? in a block of flats in South Croydon, there was also Jack Ward who was in the Army. I was told that my Father worked on Surrey Street Market when he was a kid.

We have to be careful who we mention as rootschats policy is 'no living people'  If any of the people you have mentioned may still be living you can modify your posts to remove them.  :)

Was your father in the forces in WW2. :-\   His first wife was with her parents after the 1938 marriage.

Foster Road in Central Croydon was known as 'Banghole'

If you Google "Banghole Croydon" it leads you to a Bygone Croydon group on Facebook, I'm not sure if you can see it if you don't belong to that group. One of the posts says:

"Banghole was off of Windmill road, you had Foster Road then the off licence, then Weller's greengrocers then Wilford road (Banghole) it was called that because of bomb damage in the war. "

There is a lot of new housing in that area now.

I don't think Willford Road is there anymore, but there is a park called Willford Road Recreation Ground.
