Yes, that's what I meant.

Her real name - the one her birth was registered under - was Sarah.

She always used the name Sarah, so she always used her proper name.  She didn't change it.

The only person who has been found to have changed her daughter's name, by calling her Catherine, was her mother, Mary Ann.

I had never looked at it like that I guess I assumed you had to put down your real birth name on the census I guess on.

I have been trying to find a death for Henry Mower senior he must have died between 1886 and 1890 when Mary Ann married Joseph Jones , she is down as a widow on her marriage certificate so I assume he died

On the year Mary Ann Married Joseph Jones 1890

Mr Goddard opened his first Pie and Mash shop in Evelyn street Deptford
It was not far from them in Sayer Street, I like to think they went in and had a meat Kidney pie or maybe stewed eels.
I found the most fab picture of Mr Goddard on the net standing proud as punch outside his shop.

The only surviving child of Mary Ann back with her real father who we all believe was Joseph Jones ,Sarah/Catherine names him as her father on her marriage certificate to Joseph Watson .
And Sarah/Catherine was born 4 months before her marriage to Henry Mower.

All the pieces are coming together thanks to Rootschat

If Sarah's father really was Joseph Jones, I wonder why Mary Ann couldn't/didn't marry him when she knew she was pregnant with Sarah.

Sarah's first marriage, as Doyle. It does look from this as though her father's name might have been left blank.

The only death possibility for Henry I can see is
Dec 1889 Poplar 1c 401
Mower, Henry
age 40

It doesn't tally with the age on the marriage. But I cant see any Henry Mower born 1848/9 on the census to match with that death registration.

Looking at the 1911 census for Sarah and Edward Rowden, I see that in their 12 years of marriage Sarah has had 7 children, only 3 of whom survived - things like that really demonstrate how difficult life was comparatively recently.

And my Grandmother Edith was one who survived and she had 13 children that lived .
One of them got a passage to Australia for £10

Can you imagine that today there would be a stampede

So glad I found Roots Chat
