I may be totally off base here, but if you look at the marriage cert for Henry and Mary Ann (1881), Henry's surname is written clearly as Mower, but when he signs his name it looks more like Mauer.

Am I grasping at straws?!

Not at all your not the first to point that out about Mower , sometimes even Muir.

If the 1881 census was in April when Mary Ann had moved back in with her mother Ann , Sarah /Catherine would have been about a month old she is not on the census is that strange . She was married 4 months laterTo Henry Mower .

Looking again at the Mower family who were taken into the workhouse in 1858, because the husband, John Mower, was ill.

The children were: Emma  18;  Mary 16;  Jane 15; John 5 and twins William & Henry age 13 months.

If William and Henry were only babies when their father died, it's possible they didn't know his name or occupation.  (I've been surprised by the amount of children (legitimate) I've come across who didn't know their deceased father's correct name.)

The two boys were in Hanwell workhouse in 1871.

There's a William Mower getting married in 1878 who is a police constable.  Maybe that's where Henry got the idea from.

Thank you so much for looking  I had when I was first looking saw a possibility that Henry could have been a twin.  On his marriage certificate to Mary Ann Doyle in 1881 Shadwell Middlesex his father John is not down as deceased . I can not find any record of a John Mower in London with a son Henry .
