Kearns Family - Loughanboy, Leo, Ballyhaunis
« on: Friday 25 March 16 10:30 GMT (UK) »
Looking for information on the above family as they were listed per 1911 Census:

John Kearns Age 50
Ellen Kearns Age 38
Patrick Kearns Age 22
Molly Kearns Age 15
Ambrose Kearns Age 14

The Patrick Kearns above married twice, first to a Catherine Tarpey and then to Bridget Concannon.

The Ambrose Kearns above was killed in WW1 at Battle of the Sommes.

The Molly Kearns above possibly married an O'Malley man.

I am particularly interested in the Ellen Kearns above as I do not know her maiden name, all I do know is that she was from County Roscommon

For reference, here's the link to 1911 census-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Mayo/Loughanboy/Leo/732058

Same family in 1901-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Mayo/Loughanboy/Leo/1590004

Birth certificates for any of the children will show mother's maiden name

Not sure if this is of any help, there is a tree in Anc they have Ellen bn in Mayo no maiden name, children listed as you stated and spouse John. It states Ellen died aged 40 in 1911.
Young Ambrose, so sad died aged 21 according to CWGC son of John and Ellen in Belgium.

As well as often being incorrect Ancestry trees can be very misleading. That online tree says "Ellen Unknown died in 1911 when she was 40 years old." but reading further down it says died "aft 1911 • Leo, Loughanboy, Mayo, Ireland." Then, next entry on timeline says "Relation to Head of House: Mother 1915 • 24 Bedford St, Hulme M C"  ::)

Note: there are at least 3 online trees for this family.

Link to cemetery doesn't work (pasted without a space after name) but this link to burial record, etc. on CWGC site should work-

Aghadowey, Tina,

Thanks for the research above.

Other information on the family I have is that the Patrick Kearns was a policeman in the UK but returned to Ireland after the death of his brother Ambrose.

As mentioned already Patrick married a Catherine Tarpey and had the following children:

Molly  - who subsequently married a James Friel
Elizabeth ( Elsie) - who subsequently married a Patrick Demspey
Sean - unmarried - died young

I am just hoping someone recognises some of the names above as the various family trees available do not seem to shed any light on the maiden name of Ellen Kearns

I agree re a child's birth certificate.

This is the nearest I can find in the indexes which seems to fit:

John Kearins and Ellen Grennon who have the same reference

Her name was Eleanor Grennan from Laughil in County Roscommon, daughter of John Grennan, she married John Kearns on 8 May 1888 in Ballinlough RC Church and went on to have the children you can see in the census returns.

 Gaffy,

Wow, thanks a lot for this!

I am researching on behalf of my mother in law who is a grandchild of Eleanor.

You are hardly a distant cousin??!
