Captain Patrick Alexander
« on: Saturday 26 March 16 00:13 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone,

I am looking for information on Captain Patrick Alexander 1818 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland
and D:08/10/1862 in Taradale, Victoria, Australia. He married Mary Easson and together they had one daughter Mary Isabelle born 1850. I am unsure of any of the ships he captained but there is a family legend that one of his ships sank near Apollo Bay, Victoria and the anchor from his ship can still be seen today.

I am not 100% sure of his parents but I have a index for a birth of a Patrick Alexander. I am unsure if this is him though... The place of birth and year is correct which might be a starting point

Name:   Patrick Alexander
Gender:   Male
Birth Date:   20 Jan 1818
Baptism Date:   19 Feb 1818
Baptism Place:   Dundee,Angus,Scotland
Father:   Patk. Alexander
Mother:   Isabella Nicoll
FHL Film Number:   993425

Any help identifying the true Patrick Alexander would be much appreciated. Family stories always change over time and it would be great to know the truth.

G'day wivenhoe. Thank you for all the info! Every little bit helps :) Currently I do not have any BDM certificates for this side of the family, only indexes. I am planning on buying a few off the VIC BDM though but haven't got round to it yet. I only have ancestry (not find my past etc) and there is no ship records or anything of that matter regarding Patrick's captaincy and sea life before his young(ish) death that I have been able to find. I do not know the names of any of the ships he was aboard, or what age he went to sea. Will have to keep searching. I have information on the Parnell's if that is any help to anyone.

The Vic BMD record for the death of Patrick Alexander shows his age as 44, born Dundee, fathers name Patrick.......would certainly be worth purchasing.

There is a merchant seaman record for a Patrick Alexander, born abt 1817 in Dundee, with voyages in 1847 and 1848 but I have no idea what all the numbers and notations mean?

Just got some books about shipwrecks along the Great Ocean Road and found Captain Alexander's ship! Here is a extract from one of them...

So now know that his ship was the Grange. Another family legend I should also have said is that apparently at some point he left the seas in search for gold at Ballarat. Maybe he went after his ship sunk?
