Who is given as his father on the marriage certificate?    That should help find him in 1881 and with luck he will be with his parents.

What about Dec qtr 1879 St.Austell. Perhaps John should be James?

Hes definitely called James as we have him on census and have a marriage certificate for him.   its very odd that we cannot find a birth certificate for him he died in 1964 and his headstone has his wife's name on it who is called Emily its just odd we dont have a birth certificate for him

This appears to be the most likely candidate. The family and him perhaps preferred to call him James rather than John (it can very often happen). You can call yourself any name providing it's not for illegal purposes.

I would be very tempted to purchase the above birth cert to check that it is the correct one.

Were his parents definitely married before his birth, or is there a chance that he could be recorded under his mother's maiden name?

His mother's maiden name was Emma Jane Richards but they were married before he was born in 1876 but may check by ordering the certificate that Jennifer said

Just saw on census that James Henry Goudge was born in St Stephens Cornwall not in St Dennis (St Stephens near St Austell)
