i found that my great, great, grandfather died at shorncliffe camp in sept 1865, i requested a death certificate from the GRO but they replied to say they could not locate. his name was george brumpton/brompton and he was with the 89th foot reg and the information came from the muster records at Kew.

Is he buried at Shorncliffe Military Cemetery, the cemetery that served the camp?

Have you validated the info in this post?
(Seems to be a submitted "Memory" submitted in November 2015)
https://familysearch.org/photos/stories/20864775  particularly the final two paragraphs :

April 1865 – The Service Companies of the 89th Foot leave India and arrive at Dover in August. In preparation the Depot leaves Fermoy on 22/06/1865 and moves to Shorncliffe.

07/09/1865 – George Brumpton dies at Shorncliffe, the effects and credits musters show that his unpaid wages (minus stoppages) go to his widow Ellen who is with the regiment at that time. He is shown in the effects as being a servant by trade from Alford in Lincolnshire.

Hi,

I'm not sure which of your posts to put this info on, but as this is the most recent here goes :)

Somewhere in your threads it says that he can't be seen in 1861 so I don't know if you have already seen these

British Army, Worldwide Index 1861

George BROMPTON
Service number:  ---(89F)
Rank:  Private
Unit or Regiment:  Southern Recruiting Depot
Regiment stationed at:  Cork

and

Geo: BROMPTON
Service number:  2448(89F)
Rank:  Private
Unit or Regiment:  Chatham Invalid Depot (Div 2)
Regiment stationed at:  Chatham

So are these the same person or not?  If not then the first one seems more likely to be 'your' George as he is in Cork where he is married in 1862.

Maybe George was ill and sent to Chatham in 1861 and enumerated twice, but if there are 2 George BROMPTON/BRUMPTONs in the 89F then how do you know which one is yours?

Regards'
Daisy

i believe the info is for the same george brumpton/brompton who was with the 89th foot regiment and number 2448, i got the info from the national archives at kew, It states that george enlisted in 1846 at hull,in 1861 the regiment are in india and george is sent home for discharge, in 1861george joins the regiment depot at fermoy and is on leave until 16th may 1861, in 1864 george is with the depot at fermoy, in 1865 the depot leaves fermoy and arrives at shorncliffe then it states that george dies at shorncliffe dated 7th sept 1865, hope this helps as i believe the two georges are the same person.
