Patrick Cregan
« on: Monday 28 March 16 15:48 BST (UK) »
Hi can anyone help me or steer me in the right direction. I've been trying to trace my great grandfather on and off for years. I have him in the 1901 census then I got his marriage cert ,he was married in navan in Jan 1892 he was 21 and his fathers name is john cregan. I've tried to go from there but I cant find a birth or baptism for him in meath.  I don't have his mothers name and I don't know where to get it as i thought it would be on the marriage cert. I'm a bit lost as to where to go from here to find him.

Is this him in 1901
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Meath/Navan_Urban/Pollbwee__Pt__of_/1617959/
If so he was born in Meath and if his father is still alive there aren't a lot to choose from
This man seems a bit old but his children are quite close to Patrick

It would be a place to start at least.

This just isn't working out for me., think I'm too tired.
There is this chap

of course you would have to buy the €4 cert and even if his father is John it's no guarantee

A John Cregan married Bridget Bray in 1878 and appears to be the parents of Margaret and Andrew

The marriage record shows his address as Brewshill which is in Navan where the marriage took place

In 1901 there is a John CREGAN living in Brewshill but on age would be a brother or cousin - LINK 1901 & LINK 1911

In 1911 there is a Lizzie CREGAN a niece aged 8 with Patrick and Lizzie SHAFFREY - LINK

1911 census for Margaret and 8 children
She states that she had 11 children of which 9 are alive; therefore one is elsewhere which could possibly be this Lizzie (see below for birth records for family)
However Patrick SHAFFREY married Elizabeth COYLE on Nov 15 1892 and I don't see immediately a CROSBY or CREGAN connection

edited to add
Michael CROSBY (parents Eugene CROSBY & Maria FAY)
m Bridget COYLE (paretns Michael COYLE & Margaret MAGUIRE?)
on Oct 30 1870 - LINK Row 59
any chance that these are related to Margaret CREGAN nee CROSBIE/CROSBY
and therefore make a COYLE connection??

What was the name of Margaret's father on the marriage certificate?

Civil Records for
1-3 Three children mother CROSBIE LINK - Elizabeth 1902; Michael 1906; Eugene 1909 -
4-7 Four children mother CROSBY LINK Mary 1901, Kate 1905; Patrick 1908 & Nannie 1914 (after census)
8 Margaret 1895 ?
9 James 1896?
10 Christopher 1899?

There were at least two further children who died before 1911
LINK to Navan CREGAN deaths 1892 - 1911 which has only a few possibilities

Karencregan

No problem, at least it all ties in

Shame the Shaffreys weren't on the Cregan side though!

However they are living in Brewshill, which was the address given by Patrick and there is still a John Cregan living there who could be related

John CREGAN married Mary PENTONY Feb 21 1895 - LINK
Witnesses were a Patrick CREGAN and Bridget PENTONY
unfortunately parents aren't listed on the transcription

Daughter Margaret (shown as Pattie in 1911) was born Mar 17 1904 - LINK

There seems to be several CREGAN families in the area
but few baptisms which could imply a spelling different or lack of records which is unfortunate

Hi Karen, while going through some old books I came across an original birth certificate for a Margaret Mary Patricia Cregan born 17 March 1904, parents were John Cregan, cattle dealer from Brews Hill, Navan and Mary Pentony. If this is your family I would be happy to let you have the certificate. Awaiting your reply,
Mary Fagan
