Help identifying birth place in census
« on: Monday 28 March 16 22:15 BST (UK) »
I'm tracing my 4th Gt grandmother Eliza Speller and am having problems identifying her place of birth. Her birth date is between 1802 and 1806 if I take the 35 in the 1841 census seriously. I cannot read the 1861 and 1871 census birth places so can anyone help? I'm tempted to say Clerkenwell but searches do not find any E Speller in that location. More info: She married George King in 1824 in St.James Paddington and had 6 children. Anyone with eagle eyes??

Hi Mike

Could you please post the references for the 1861 and 1871 Census?

Are they in Clarence Grove, St Pancras in 1871?

If so it does look like Clerkenwell.

Yes:

1861 census:  RG 9/110/ 53 p 38
1871 census: RG10/ 237/50 p18

Hope this is what you wanted. The tree I am building is the Brunger/Etheridge Tree.

Thanks

1861 also looks like Clerkenwell, Middlesex.

I am a bit amazed that you found that 1861 - their first names are hard to read aren't they?

Cheers

Hi,

I read all as Clerkenwell, however the 1871 Census states "Clerkenwell Close",  here is some
information about Clerkenwell Close from British History:-

It does look like Clerkenwell / Clerkenwell Close consistently in the censuses. Has anyone found the family in 1851? I haven't had any luck.

The three oldest children were baptised together in 1833 at the Neman Street (Irvingite) Catholic Apostolic church by Edward Irving
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Irving
It is indexed with non conformist and non-parochial registers. Maybe the family converted  to this new sect in 1833.
