registering deaths

Hi,
Could anyone tell me when it became a requirement to register a death? I can find no burial records for him
but i can only assume that's the fate of someone i am looking for.
Robinson Sutcliffe b 1859 bradford to James Sutcliffe & Maria (nee Gummersall) he's on the 1861 census but then nothing.

From September 1837.

Civil registration (i.e. national registration of births, marriages and deaths) started in 1837. It's estimated that up to 15% of births went unregistered for several years after this (see http://www.genguide.co.uk/source/civil-registration-birth-england-amp-wales/19/)... No such statistics for deaths, but a death certificate was needed in order to bury a body. (However, I've found a relative who was buried in 1864 yet I haven't found her in the death records held by the GRO.)

In your case, I would suggest searching for different spellings of his name. Have you found his parents in the 1871 census? Robinson would be aged 12 at the time so it's likely he would be living with them, however he could be with grandparents or other family members, or might have slipped through the net and not appeared on that census at all.

If you can't find a death record for him, there's a chance he emigrated, so have a look at travel records too.

1st July 1837, the same date as for births and marriages.

Best not to assume he died till you have some proof.  Perhaps he was "adopted" by another family/part of the same family and his name was changed.  Or perhaps his name has been mis-spelled on the indexes?  Lots of options.

Perhaps your elusive chap migrated/changed his name/changed the spelling of his name/moved to another county/joined the military/went to sea/committed to an asylum/joined a religious order?

If a anyone carried out a burial for which the Certificate ( that the Death has been duly registered) had not been made and delivered, as the 1836 and 1874 acts required, either by the Registrar or Coroner, they had to give notice  to the Registrar within Seven Days, if they did not they were liable to a fine not exceeding ten Pounds. However this was not always complied with and led to some deaths not being registered.
