« on: Tuesday 29 March 16 14:07 BST (UK) »

Can anyone help with a date of birth and ancestors of Thomas Grimsdale.

There is a possible record in the 1911 Census when his age is given as 40 and is living at Hedsor Grove Hyson Green Nottingham. His birthplace is given as London, England
Possibly married to Sarah Ellen Hancox 15 May 1897 in Bulwell, Notts. In 1901 census Sarah & her two children, Beatrice and Maud was staying as visitor's with Joseph Dickerson and his children in Bulwell.
Possibly then married to Ellen Foulds Jun qtr 1912 Nottingham and from the second marriage there are records of daughters Marjorie born 1913 Nottm. Alice M born 1915 Nottm and Olive born 1916 Nottm.

On his marriage certificate dated eighth June 1922 His age is stated as 50 years old (some doubt as to accuracy) and his status is given as widower, occupation Confectioner. Father William Grimsdale (Deceased) occupation Private 8th Suffolks
Spouse Mary Ann Poole aged 42 years   widow  Father John Taylor General Labourer
Both living at Brushfield Street Hyson Green Nottingham
In February 1927 he was arrested, charged and was sent to prison for 15 months. At this time his age was given as 58 years old.
Soon after he was imprisoned he became ill and died on 3rd October 1927. His address was given as 4 Speechley Street Hyson Green Nottingham and his occupation as fruiterer and army pensioner.
He was buried on the 8th October at Basford Cemetery, Nottingham

Not much to suggest I'm afraid but there is this Grimsdale bunch in Paddington 1901

Hannah 57 widow born Ireland
William 24 son born Portsmouth
Lydia 18 daughter born Reading
Thomas 26 boarder born Islington

Might be worth checking this family out just in case they are related.  Son and daughter are born in different places so might indicate a father in the military as William was.

William I think marries later in 1901 Paddington and Lydia is one of the witnesses.

Father is William Albert but no occupation given just deceased which doesn't help  :-\

Aha Lylia not Lydia marries in Paddington 1907 father William deceased soldier so maybe we are getting a few matches to the William father of your Thomas.

If it is the right family though it doesn't explain why he is a boarder in 1901 rather than son.

The Service Records for Thomas are available on A*try.

He's listed as being born in Windsor,Berks 1870 so possibly the Thomas GRIMSDELL born Mar Qtr 1869 Windsor.

I think he was the son of Elizabeth GRIMSD*l* who married Charles Thomas MANSFIELD 1870 Windsor. Elizabeth's father's name is William.

Charles,Elizabeth and Thomas are on the 1871 in Windsor. In 1881 Thomas is listed as GREENSDALE (step son).

Hard to know if it's really "your" Thomas, though!
