Hi  Michelle

I have found a Harry Williams married to a Constance M in 1901 at 24 The Crescent, Shrewsbury. He is described as an auctioneer. He was born in Layton , Essex.
Constance was born in London Piccadilly which ties in with a London marriage. Shrewsbury is near to Mongomeryshire.
also
Vera M Williams  aged 7  born Watford, Herts
Honor(?) C  do             2          Shrewsbury

I cannot see a Harry Willams born in Layton in earlier censuses but as my geographical knowledge of Essex is poor you should try putting a request under that county.

NZ is a lovely country and at the moment you have much better rugby players - I am Welsh and it hurts!!

best wishes

Hi both

Just to say that if you request a look-up in Essex (good idea!) you should know that according to their 1901 census return Harry is born 1861 and Constance born 1869.

The 1901 ref is RG13/2540 11 13

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi Michelle,

From what you said it seemed to imply that Harry Williams was born either in Montgomeryshire or Shropshire.

I have found a Gerard Cowell Williams in the second quarter of 1906.   the birth was registered in the Atcham District, volume 6a, Page 657.   Atcham is mainly in Shropshire, to the west and north of Shrewsbury, and partly in Montgomeryshire.   The reference was obtained from freeBMB at http://www.freebmd.rootsweb.com/ If you have not used them before, it is a FREE  :D lookup site for births, marriages and deaths from 1837.   By using the reference you may obtain a Birth Certificate from the General Register Office (GRO) at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ this will show place of birth, parents etc
The Marriage of Harry Williams and Constance Maria Oakley was in the 1st quarter of 1893 in Paddington District, volume 1a, page 21.
If you wish a Marriage Certificate may be obtained as above.   This will show father's names etc

In the 1881 census for Oswestry, near to Atcham District there is an entry for a Harry Williams, born about 1867 in Oswestry, his parents were Jacob and Mary Williams, brothers and sisters Edward, George W, Thomas, Elizabeth, Margaret J.   If this family sounds familiar I can let you have fuller details.

I loved your country when I visited.   I was there many times, in Aukland and Christchurch, many years ago, and found the folk extremely pleasant and generous.   Best of luck in your search for the Williams clan.

Cheers Dave

Thanks Arranroots for mentioning the ages - I had noticed but forgot to mention it.

Dave - it may be the same Harry but the 1901 census shows him born in Essex - if it is the right one. Obviously a good idea to obtain the marriage certificate which will help trace Harry in earlier censuses.

Michelle the cost is £7 per certificate but I do not know if any extra cost is involved in posting abroad but I am sure the website will tell you.

Harry Williams has a brother William born abt 1865, a sister Ellen born 1867, Hannah born 1870.
Does this help?
