John Robert Burrows Eaton ELY
« on: Wednesday 30 March 16 16:43 BST (UK) »
My great grandfather, was the illegitimate son of Caroline Ely. He was born in St Ives 1860. Caroline was also born in St Ives but lived in London . Soon after the birth of her son she returned to London and he was brought up in St Ives by his grandparents, John and Mary Ely.
I suspect that he was named John after his grandfather but the middle three names are a puzzle. Was Caroline giving a clue about who his natural father was?
Does anyone recognise those three names?

Eaton makes me think it might be Eaton Socon, so, say, "Robert Burrows who lives at Eaton Socon"

Having said that, there were some families named Eaton within the general area at the time.

If Caroline was living in London prior to the birth then maybe the father was too  ???

Where/when do you have her in London

Have you seen/got his marriage certificate to see if he wrote a dad on there?  I'm guessing not as it's a lot of cost to see if 1cm of paper's empty or not :)

Hi StanleysChesterton
Thank you for your reply. I had considered the Eaton Socon link, but have not followed that through yet. I did wonder if there might be a remark, written in the margin, by the vicar in the church register so I thought l would request a look-up next as I am not able at this time to visit the RO.
Unfortunately, no father is named on his birth cert. and his grandfather John is named as his father on their marriage cert.

Hi Rosie,
Years ago l think I had evidence that she lived with her sister, but unfortunately we had a flood at our house and l lost a lot of my family history records. ( It was before computers). Thinking about it, I may be wrong about her being in London before the birth and she only moved there later.
She married in St Mary's, Lambeth in 1864 and had 2 more children.  She kept in touch with her son John and my grandmother told me lots about him but couldn't tell me when or where his mother Caroline died. l believe she was still in London.
Thanks for your input

Hi there Pat!
I am doing some family tree research for a neighbour and have come up with a connection to John Robert Burrows Eaton Ely.
I have managed to find out the following :-
He married Emma Welham in St Ives in 1882;
Four children were born between 1883 and 1887;
The family moved here to Chesterfield some time between 1887 and 1892 (for reasons unknown) – five more children were born between 1892 and 1901;
Emma died in 1912 and John probably re-married, to Gertude Robinson;
A further child was born in 1916.
The neighbour is a descendant of Georgina Ely, his sixth child..
If you can confirm (or refute!) any of the above, it would be much appreciated.

Hello,
John RBE Ely was my gr grandfather and I imagine you are helping either Alan Black's, Walter's or Joan Black's family. One or two of your facts are wrong and l can certainly help you with the family history. Unfortunately , I cannot at the moment because my husband is  ill and to top it all , he broke his hip today and is in hospital for the next few days at least. As soon as I can concentrate again on family history I will be in touch.

Hi there Pat!
I'm so sorry to hear about your current problems; hopefully your husband will be up and about sooner rather later..
My neighbours are the offspring of Joan Black who sadly died a couple of years ago.
When you feel up to it, I am sure they will be delighted to find out more about their family history.
Kind regards
Phil
