Buttevant is in Co. Cork, Ireland but could it be a census record from England or Wales (rather than his birth certificate) that says "buttevant resident"?
Perhaps if you post more details from that record we can help further.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

In the 1901 census my grandfather is shown as being a resident of Duke of York's Royal Military Asylum, which I understand was for the education of the children of regular soldiers.  The record shows that he was born in Ireland.

His name was Charles Grist.  I must tell you that I loved him very much, he was a perfect Granddad, but I never thought to ask him anything about his roots.  I am so angry with myself.

Well found Giggsy,I was looking for someone born in Buttevant Resident  ;D ;D ;D

Ahhh I think I have found him where he is mentioned as a Buttevant (Resident) It is on the census after the one Griggsy mentioned.

I suggest that you look at the image and read the column above Birthplace, people had to answer an extra question if they were anywhere other than England or Wales.

So what are you trying to find out about him?

This might be his marriage? If you get the cert (£9-25 from the GRO) you will find out who his father was and what he did, sometimes witnesses can be useful family members too, although not quite so often if the person was not born locally, unless other family members came over here too.
