Whitfield family.
« on: Friday 01 April 16 15:22 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the birth of John Whitfield born about 1814 in the Stockton area, possibly Yarm.  I understand that in 1814 this area would of been in North Yorkshire.  I have very little to go on, the census only gives me his birth being in Stockton and Yorkshire.  Any help would be greatly appreciated. Any siblings found would be an added bonus.

There is a baptism at Yarm:

9 August 1813 - John, son of Nicholas and Elizabeth Whitfield of Yarm - Labourer

Added:  That is the only baptism of Whitfield at Yarm - 1805-1825

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Welcome to rootschat Jools.  :)

There are quite a lot of Whitfields in the area so a bit more information might be needed.

How did you get to John? Did you get his approximate year of birth from his age in the censuses? Which censuses do you have him on? (are any missing?)
What makes you think he could have been born in Yarm?

Do you have his marriage certificate and does it tell you his father's name?
Do his children's births/baptisms give any clues as to where John was from?

Added: I see BB has provided you with a possible baptism, but I will go ahead and post anyway.  :)

What is your source for the 1814 birth in or around Stockton as it does not appear to tie up with census records. The closest i can match is a John 1814-1878 with wife Mary (Robinson) who is born in Yorkshire or Winlaton according to censuses although someone has said his birthplace is Stockton with no proof (quite the opposite in fact)

It would be helpful if you could confirm a few facts and maybe say what censuses you think you have him on
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Many thanks BumbleB, Ruskie and Davidft for your prompt replies to my enquiry.  The only information I have about the birthplace of John Whitfield is from  census records. The 1841 census not born in the county of Durham, 1851 census born in Winlaton, 1861 census born in Yorkshire and 1871 census born in Stockton. Quite an assortment.  He died in 1878 aged 64 years so sadly no more information available. I only have one of his childrens birth certificates but nothing mentioned there.  I have looked for his birth in the area of Winlaton, Parish of Ryton but nothing found there.  Yarm was only a shot in the dark. He married his wife Mary Robinson in 1833 so sadly no marriage certificate. I have the record of his marriage at St Pauls, Winlaton but no information there either. Its a bit of a dilemma, but thanks again.
