Are these two jobs similar?
« on: Sunday 03 April 16 10:51 BST (UK) »
I'm helping a friend with her family and we are trying to decide if a man who was a Weight Taker in 3 court appearances in the 1880s is the same man who is described by his children as a freight clerk on their marriages in the 1880s and 1890s. We think it is the same person but someone else wants more proof.

Is a Weight Taker similar to a Freight Clerk? The man in the court was accused of forging a request for the delivery of goods with intent to defraud. In court he is described as a Weight Taker?

My first thought was there a spelling error and should have said Freight taker in the court?

Some cargo would be measured by weight.  Coal, flour, cotton  the list is endless.

If he worked on the railways then a Freight Clerk, aka goods clerk; receives cosignment notes in respect of goods for despatch; collects cash in certain instances; invoices goods to receiving station; prepares delivery sheets for carmen; keeps and prepares certain returns and undertakes some correspondence; at the larger stations, the work is sectionalised and particular duties are allocated to each clerk; e.g. parcels clerk.
