Marriage 1657 Walloon Church Canterbury
« on: Sunday 03 April 16 10:56 BST (UK) »
I have a marriage entry from the Walloon Church in Canterbury from 1657. I can read enough to work out it is the right one, but my French is not good enough to read much more. Can anyone please help me out with a translation? It is the entry for Jacques Le Sedt in April 1657.
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Pine/Pyne, Dowdeswell, Kempster, Sando/Sandoe/Sandow, Nancarrow, Hounslow, Youatt, Richardson, Jarmyn, Oxlade, Coad, Kelsey, Crampton, Lindner, Pittaway, and too many others to name.
Devon, Dorset, Gloucs, Cornwall, Warwickshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Wilts, Germany, Sweden, and of course London, to name a few.

I'm afraid I can't read much from that scan.  Where is the original - it might be easier for potential helpers to read from that.

All I can read from the present scan is:

Promise of marriage between Jacques le Sedt  son of - - - -  native of Canterbury & Ann Leh- - - daughter of ?  native of  ? near ?
Suffolk: Pearl(e),  Garnham, Southgate, Blo(o)mfield,Grimwood/Grimwade,Josselyn/Gosling
Durham/Yorkshire: Sedgwick/Sidgwick, Shadforth
Ireland: Davis
Norway: Torreson/Torsen/Torrison

ADDED - I think you'll need to remove the complete image, for copyright reasons.
I believe the Canterbury registers have been transcribed and published by the Huguenot Society -- you might find them online somewhere?

Thank you very much to both of you. I will remove the image as you suggest, Bookbox; I've never been able to work out how to crop an image unfortunately.
The image is from the nonconformist records on Ancestry, doing a search on the surname Le Sedt.

Hello
I came across your inquiry regarding Jaques le Sedt.  Jaques was my 9x great grand-uncle, younger brother of my 9x great grandfather Jacob (le) Sedt or Sack.  I'm guessing from the name Pine that you are related to Linda Young wife of Arthur French.  Arthur and I are both descended from Edward Sack and Hannah Charlesworth, him through their oldest son Charlie Sack and me through their youngest James.

Did you find out anything else about Jaques and his wife Anne le Houcq?  They moved up to London after their marriage and baptised two daughters at the Huguenot church in Threadneedle Street.  They then appear in the records in Leiden, Holland where they baptised their son Isaac in 1662.  After that the trail goes cold.  I wonder if they emigrated to America, like a lot of Protestants from Leiden around that time.

By the way, transcriptions and translations of the Canterbury church records can be found online at   archive.org

Kind regards
Philip Sack

Hello Philip,
Sorry for the delay in replying.
No, I am not related to the people you mentioned. When I posted my query, I was tracing what I thought were my wife's ancestors. However a DNA test has proven this to be wrong.
Apologies,
Darren
