Alexander MOORHEAD a "National Teacher" - b. Longford 1860ish
« on: Monday 04 April 16 01:39 BST (UK) »
Hi All

Wondering how to track a "National Teacher" after the 1911 census?

I am trying to follow Alexander Moorhead born about 1860 in Co. Longford and his family.
But it seems "National Teachers" moved around the country, is that a correct assumption????

I have Alexander Moorhead & family on the 1901 living in Curraheen, Rosscarbery, Co. Cork
With wife Ellen and 1 year old son John and Ellen's mother Mary Kingston.

I have them on the 1911 then in Church Quarter, Granard Urban, Co. Longford

Between the 1901 and 1911, Alexander's wife Ellen presumably died and he remarried in about 1908 to an Elizabeth (They indicate they have been married 4 years on the 1911).
Also 3 more children were born to Alexander which I believe were all Ellen's.
James in abt 1902, Annie in abt 1904 and William in abt 1905.

I believe by 1925 Alexander Moorhead and his family were in Ballina, Co. Mayo?  This from a ships record that I believe were his daughter Anne and son William heading to Toronto Canada in 1925.

What records can I tap into to track them after 1911???
I am interested in finding out what happened to his daughter Anne Moorhead

Thanks all

Thanks dathai ;)

3x married ... two wives dying young  :-\
Seems all 4 children were Ellen Kingston's.

What does "National Teacher" mean?  Is that just how Ireland refers to their Teachers?

From the source where you found Margaret's will probated in 1906, Is there a Will for Alexander Moorhead by chance dathai?

I believe he died in 1944 from the civil registrations?

Anything that might mention his children after 1911 is what I am trying to find...

Thanks

National School teacher is a Primary School teacher, the schools were created by the state in 1831 so every child could receive an education, the name National School continues to this day.

Hello,

I can't see a 1944 death. Do you have the district?

There is a death in 1928 Granard District which is the right area for his birth and 1911.
Alexander Moorhead 73 yrs. The age is slightly out.

Are there any other details on the emigration records for the children?
Regards
Heywood

** added- have just seen the other entry 'Alexandrew' Moorhead 1944. I also note the two Alexanders in 1911 so the one above looks to be the wrong man.
Perhaps you should check the death certificate or perhaps see if there are any obituaries?

There is an entry for the 1928 death here http://www.nationalarchives.ie/search-the-archives/
But iPad doesn't like that site so I can't see it very well but think there is an occupation mentioned on the image.
