1891/1901 Census
« on: Monday 04 April 16 19:39 BST (UK) »
Mary Elizabeth Osborne married James Edmiston 1906 in the South Shields district. I can`t find Mary`s birth and I hope she can be found on the 1891/1901 census returns
 Thanks

I suspect her birth registration on the Civil Reg Index on Ancestry has been shown as;

Mary Lizzie Osburne Q/E Jun 1883 South Shields Reg District.

She is on both censuses in 1891 and 1901.

1891 - with parents William and Elizabeth - aged 8 in Hedworth, Monkton & Jarrow.
1901 - a female servant in a house, born Jarrow - living in South Shields - aged 18.
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

A free search on Family search in 1911 gives a Mary Elizabeth EDMISTON, age 28 born Jarrow living in Jarrow, other searches give James EDMISTON age 29, born Govan, Lanarkshire and a James William EDMISTON, age 2 born Jarrow - both also living in Jarrow

If they sound likely then:

quite possible, given her age and birthplace are:
1901 RG13/Piece4726/Folio79/Page52

14, Logan Terrace, South Shields
Mary E OSBORNE, age 18, born Jarrow, general domestic servant in the house of Peter and Mary Campbell

1891 RG12/Piece4169/Folio121/Page42

117 William Lane, Hebburn

Head William OSBOURNE age29, Colliery Labourer, born Norwich
Wife  Elizabeth OSBOURNE, age 28, born Durham, Shields
Mary E OSBOURNE, age 8, scholar, born Jarrow
Ellen OSBOURNE, age 6, scholar, born Jarrow

Boo

Paulsdad,

Just for information - and I don't know where you had actually looked - but because the surname may have been spelt various ways - on the Ancestry site - I simply searched on Mary Osb*

ie - using a wild card after the first 3 letters.
On Ancestry you can also use a wild card the other way round - ie * instead of the FIRST 3 letters.

Note that in 1891 the family were spelt as Osbourne - whilst in 1901 Mary was spelt Osborne.

Hence on her birth reg - the 1891 - and the 1901 - the surname is spelt differently on each. This is why a wild card * can be useful.

Please forgive me if you already know this - I mention it just in case it helps in future searches.
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Thanks boo, I didn`t know tht James was Scottish. The Osbornes came from Norfolk. This was at a time when lots of people came to Jarrow to work in the shipyard
