Shervington Antigua
« on: Wednesday 06 April 16 07:44 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am looking for information about my grandfather James Enoch Shervington who came to Australia from Antigua.  I have a marriage certificate from his marriage to Mary Mullens who was Irish.  He was born in 1851 and his father's name was Joseph Shervington.

Hi - is he the same "James Enock Shirvington" for whom marriage banns were called in Poplar, London in 1871 with Emma Eleanor Oakley?

They don't seem to have gone through with the marriage - it looks as though Emma may have married someone else in Bethnal Green in 1873.

When did James arrive in Australia?

I'm not sure whether it is the same James Enoch as I don't have any information about when he left Antigua, or when he arrived in Australia.  I doubt that there would have been ships sailing to Australia from Antigua, so he may well have gone to the UK first, and then sailed to Australia after that.  The marriage certificate is dated 1878, so perhaps it is the same person.  Do you have any information on that James Enoch?

Yes, I know, but it might save others searching for details on the family that have already been found.

Unfortunately banns registers contain very little personal information.  Banns were called on 3, 10 and 17 September 1871.  Both James (a bachelor) and Emma (a spinster) was recorded as 'of this parish', being All Saints, Poplar.  However that does not mean that either of them was necessarily a long-term local, just that they each had a local address at the time.

I can't see records of another man by the same name, so it may well be your James.  If so, it obviously places him in London in September 1871.
