Please Save Safely
« on: Tuesday 12 April 16 04:18 BST (UK) »
I thought I'd just post a tip to all about the importance of saving all our fantastic papers, photographs, & absolute hard work. We are currently moving down south of Western Australia, & in our 'wisdom' stored all my family history files (14) with years & years of documents, letters etc, at my sister place in her huge steel shed. Unfortunately they had the Yarloop fires,  alas, not only 2 people lost their lives, most of the town was demolished, & yes, we lost everything. I still don't have the heart to begin again, it's just too sad at the moment. No doubt, I will start again, but please save well.  :-\

That's just terrible.  And of course worse things happened like people losing their lives, still and all you must feel totally devastated and unmotivated.  The only good thing is that these days it's a lot easier than it used to be with so much online but still a horrible thing to happen.  And of course while you can replace docs, etc.  the photographs are lost forever.  :'(

I have had that feeling twice in the past. Once my PC crashed, and the computer "expert" I called to save everything ended up wiping the hard drive.  ::) The second time I thought I would transfer everything genealogical to an external hard drive, to avoid the same happening again. The Hard drive I bought came with "easy to use" software for easy transfer of files. So I used the program to transfer the Genealogy folder on my PC. I checked to see if it was on the hard drive, and then deleted the folder from my PC. Only problem was that the folder was empty! Last time I ever used their program for "easy" transfer.

That's tragic flocklet. The town must be devastated especially with two people losing their lives.

Hopefully in the future you will start again but I can understand how you feel at the moment.

Makes me think about my own storage. Apart from what's online the rest is just in a cupboard upstairs
including photos and documents which could never be replaced. I will seriously need to look at this.
Having said that how safe is safe in certain circumstances like yours.

Take care.
