Jim, so approximately how many men would be in a D battery? I'm particularly interested in 178 Brigade.

A Brigade often had different size guns so it would depend on what type of gun D Bty. had.
From what I can see 178/Bde. was a Howitzer Bde. but did have 18 pounders.

According to this D/Bty. manned 18 pounders & had a crew of 10.

Hi Jim, they had 4.5 inch howitzers.

Their diary says they had 4 Howitzers + 2 80 pounders + 2 60 pounders.

A field battery had in the order of 200 men and a similar number of horses.  I hope you are able to get the photo you are looking for in another place.  The battery concerned had 6 18 pounder guns, D Battery had the heavier calibre howitzers.
